History of Cold Brew Coffee

Cold brewing, also known as cold water extraction or cold pressing, is the steeping of coffee grounds in water at cool temperatures for an extended period of time. Coarsely ground beans are soaked in water for about 12 to 24 hours.[8][9] The water is usually kept at room temperature, but chilled water can also be used.

After soaking, the coffee grounds are filtered out of the water using a paper coffee filter, fine metal sieve, French press, or felt. The result is a coffee concentrate diluted with water or milk, sometimes even served hot, but often served chilled, over ice, or mixed with ice and other ingredients like chocolate.[10]

Cold brew coffee originated in Japan, where it has been a traditional method of making coffee for centuries. Slow-Drip Cold Brew, also known as Kyoto-style or in East Asia as Dutch coffee (after the name of the coffee essences brought to Asia by the Dutch), refers to a process of dripping water through the coffee grounds room temperature for many hours.
